SPACE OF BECOMING
Space of Becoming - A Dance-Theatre Collaboration Across Oceans Space of Becoming is an international dance-theatre production bringing together artists from The Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and South Africa.
It’s a co-production between Sites of Memory and DOX (Netherlands), nATANDA Dance Theatre (Sri Lanka) and Camissa Create (South Africa). Through dance, music, spoken word, and visual art, the performance explores interconnected colonial legacies, systems of oppression and histories of slavery, while critically examining their enduring impact on societies and personal lives today.
The work opens an artistic dialogue across these three nations, bringing hidden histories to light and creating space for reflection, dialogue and healing. The title 'Space of Becoming' refers to a space in the process of becoming: a place where history is not fixed, but can be read, felt and shared anew. The project tries not only to expose what has been lost, silenced or suppressed, but also to imagine what becomes possible when stories are returned to the spaces from which they have disappeared.
This process is directed by Katy Streek (artistic director, co-founder Sites of Memory), Luke de Kock (choreographer, director Camissa Create), and Kapila Palihawadana (choreographer, artistic director nATANDA).
