Kurunegala and the North Western Province: A Guide to the Events Circuit Nobody Writes About

    October 3, 2026·7 min read

Guides to Sri Lankan events go to Colombo, Kandy and the south coast, and stop. Kurunegala, an hour or two up the expressway from Colombo, rarely makes it in. That is an oversight. The North Western Province has had 54 ticketed events on TicketsMinistry across 24 venues, and 2026 has already been its busiest year by a distance.

The 2026 figure is more than double 2025 with three months to go, and with seven events still on sale. These are TicketsMinistry listings, not every event in the province, and the totals combine venues listed under more than one spelling.

    Four circuits, not one

What makes the province interesting is that it runs several distinct scenes at once, each with its own venues and prices.

    • Stage drama. The Provincial Council Auditorium is one of the busiest theatre venues outside Colombo, with 11 productions. It is a regular stop on the touring circuit, so a Sinhala play you missed in Colombo can come through Kurunegala later.
    • Seated concerts. The Epitome Hotel's ten concerts make it the province's main indoor music room. Oba Ma Hamu Vu, on 28 November, brings Karunarathna Divulgane and Deepika Priyadarshani, from LKR 5,000.
    • Open-ground concerts. Public grounds in Kuliyapitiya, Alawwa, Makandura and Kurunegala host big outdoor shows at the lowest prices in the province.
    • Electronic music. The newest of the four, and all from 2026: Spice Island Sessions, Tacenda, and nights at hotels in Kurunegala and Wariyapola.

The coast is a fifth, smaller circuit: Wennappuwa, Chilaw and Orilla have hosted a handful of hotel and beach concerts, including Chill Theory at Avenra Gangaara this month.

    Standing, mat seating and couples

Open-ground concerts here are priced differently from Colombo shows, and the tier names are worth reading. Adaraneeya Hendawak in Kuliyapitiya sells five tiers: Standing (LKR 1,500), Single Mat Seating (2,500), Gold VIP Seating (3,000), Couple Mat Seating (4,000) and Platinum VIP Seating (5,000).

    • Mat seating means a place on a mat on the ground, closer than standing and cheaper than a chair. Bring something to sit on comfortably for a long evening.
    • Couple tickets are common outside Colombo. Adaraneeya Hendawak's couple mat ticket saves LKR 1,000 on two singles, and Adareta Mathakayak sells a Together tier.
    • Presale tiers sell out. At Sensation in Alawwa, all three presale prices had gone by early October, a week before the show.

    Getting there

    • From Colombo, the Central Expressway has cut the drive to Kurunegala to roughly two hours, depending on traffic at each end.
    • Concerts finish between 11pm and midnight. If you are coming from Colombo, decide in advance whether you are driving back or staying.
    • Kurunegala is a junction town. It is on the way to Dambulla, Anuradhapura and the Cultural Triangle, so an event here fits easily into a longer trip north.
    • Electronic events sometimes list only the town. Check the event page and the organiser's channels for the exact location.
