Running Events and Marathons in Sri Lanka: How Registration Works

    October 3, 2026·6 min read

Running events are new to online ticketing in Sri Lanka, and they work differently from everything else on the calendar. You are not buying a seat or a place in a crowd. You are registering a runner for a distance, at a start time measured in minutes, with a route to finish. This guide covers how that works, using the races listed on TicketsMinistry so far.

    Where the races have been

Running events listed on TicketsMinistry to date, by location, as of 3 October 2026

    LocationEvents
    Colombo (Independence Square, Viharamahadevi Park)4
    Negombo (Kadolkale Ground)1
    Galle (Galle Fort)1
    Jaffna (Durayappah Stadium)1
    Kandy (Gatabe Sports Ground)1

Eight races is a small sample of the running calendar. But the spread is wide: north, south, the hill country and the capital. Independence Square is the closest thing to a home ground, with three of Colombo's four.

On sale now: Kandy Half Marathon

Kandy Half Marathon, Sunday 6 December 2026, 6.00am start, Gatabe Sports Ground. Entry fees in LKR.

    DistanceEntry fee
    2 km3,000
    5 km3,000
    10 km3,000
    21.1 km (half marathon)5,000

Note the pricing. The 2, 5 and 10 km entries cost the same, so the choice between them is purely about how far you want to run. Only the half marathon costs more.

How a race entry differs from a concert ticket

    • Each entry is one runner. If you are registering family or friends, buy one entry per person, in the distance each of them is running.
    • The distance is the tier. Choosing the wrong one is the commonest mistake, and it matters more than a wrong seat: it decides your start, your route and your result.
    • Organisers may ask for more at checkout. Where they do, expect questions such as T-shirt size, an emergency contact or a medical declaration. Answer them for the runner, not the person paying.
    • Your QR is your registration. Bring it to race pack or bib collection, which the event page will describe. Some races hand out bibs the day before, others on the morning.

    Choosing a distance

    • 2 km is a walk for most people and a good family entry. Children and first-timers belong here.
    • 5 km is the right first race for anyone who runs a little. It takes most recreational runners between 25 and 45 minutes.
    • 10 km needs some training. If you are not already running 5 km comfortably, give yourself six to eight weeks.
    • 21.1 km is a serious undertaking. Enter it if you have run 15 km or more in training, not as a first race.

    Running in Sri Lankan conditions

The early starts are not arbitrary. Kandy's race starts at 6.00am to beat the heat, and heat and humidity are the biggest risk for runners here, not distance. Drink well the day before, take water at every station, and slow down rather than speed up if you feel unwell. Kandy is also hill country, so expect gradients and look at the route when it is published. December is the north-east monsoon, which can bring showers to the hills.

If you are organising a race

    • Set each distance up as its own tier, with its own capacity. Course capacity, not demand, is what sells out first.
    • Collect what you need at registration with custom checkout fields: T-shirt size, emergency contact, waiver acknowledgement. It is far harder to chase afterwards.
    • Scan QR codes at bib collection, not just at the start line. It confirms each entry once and stops a ticket being used twice.
    • Publish the route, cut-off times and pack collection details on the event page. Runners plan around them.

    Frequently asked questions

How much is the Kandy Half Marathon 2026 entry fee?

LKR 3,000 for the 2 km, 5 km and 10 km distances, and LKR 5,000 for the 21.1 km half marathon. The race starts at 6.00am on 6 December 2026 at Gatabe Sports Ground, Kandy.

Can I register someone else for a running event?

Yes, but buy one entry per runner and choose each runner's distance carefully. If the organiser asks for details such as T-shirt size or an emergency contact, give the runner's own details.

Which race distance should a beginner choose?

5 km is the usual first race for anyone who already runs a little. 2 km suits walkers and children, and the 10 km and half marathon need several weeks of training.
